unearthed

This series is a collaboration with nature. I begin by working in situ, under a canopy of trees. I investigate the effects that the forest floor has on the cotton rag paper that I bury under plant detritus for two to six weeks. Once the sheets are unearthed, I respond to the stains and the decay of the paper, with abstract drawings, reminiscent of entwined roots, squiggly lichen and delicate mycelium networks. My interventions might counter, enhance or articulate these organic imprints and smudges, with fluid lines and subtle shading, in a dialogue with the land. I’m experimenting with using natural mark making materials such as, ink, charcoal, pastel and watercolour derived from foraged plant and soil pigments.
